When I was a little kid, my mom always made sure to watch what I drank to hydrate myself. Water was first, followed by milk and some sort of watered down juice (to cut down on the sugar intake).
One hot summer day, I was running around with some neighborhood kids close to their house. We were working up a real good sweat and decided it was time for something cool and refreshing. I was invited inside their home where I followed them into their kitchen. It was then that they pulled out some fluorescent blue liquid from their fridge and offered me a glass.
“What is that?”
“It’s Kool-Aid. Do you want some?”
“I don’t know I’ve never had it before. What’s it taste like?”
“What!? You’ve never had it before!? It’s delicious, try some!”
As soon as that liquid touched my lips, it was like time froze. I could almost feel my pupils dilating. It was like Jesus came down to let me drink from his benevolently cupped hands and it was good. It was very good. Too good to be true.
The story ends with me coming home that day and asking my mom to buy Kool-Aid for me the next time she went to the store. This of course received with an unreasonable long time of laughter, after which she smiled and said no.
Today of course I know now that this sweet liquid cocaine known as Kool-Aid is the result of sugar, water, and the color blue (I see you Dave Chapelle). While it may not have the same affect on me today as it did when I was 8, it sure as hell can be used to make an awesome cocktail drink that will make any adult smile.
