Vodka Review: Island 808 Coconut Vodka

Island 808 Coconut Vodka Review – Initial Impressions:

Island 808 Coconut Vodka is a flavored vodka of the relatively new brand Island 808 that is trying to make a name for itself for it’s high quality fruit flavor. Many Vodka Cocktails and Vodka Mixed Drinks do well with flavored liquor included in the recipes. Because of this, you want flavored vodka that will give you the most bang for your buck.

Just like their standard Island 808 vodka, Island 808 coconut vodka tries to really embody the Hawaiian Islands by distilling and producing their vodka from pineapples.

After the distilling process, they then add coconut flavors to give that refreshing taste of fresh fruit. Not everyone is a huge fan of coconut, which will make this vodka review interesting. Getting the coconut flavor right is important, especially considering that coconut vodka produced poorly usually turns out horrendous. Lets go to the shot and see how they did!

Island 808 Coconut Vodka Review -The Shot:

My goal is to record myself take a shot of every vodka brand that I review. Why? Well, nothing describes the pain/joy of taking a shot more than looking at a persons face while he does it! So before I describe the shot, go ahead and press play to observe my immediate reaction.

Island 808 Coconut Vodka is only 30% alcohol, so naturally it’s a little easier to shoot than regular vodkas. If you remember from my Pineapple Vodka Review, it went down incredibly smooth and the flavor was very full and rich. I liked their Mango Vodka almost as well. The Coconut, however, just couldn’t quite live up to my expectations.

The shot was good in that the coconut flavors were really well done. The cool, distinct flavor of coconut washed over my mouth and was quite pleasant. What else washed over my mouth, however, was that burn that you usually experience when you are drinking a poor quality vodka. There was also a faint bitterness that lingered on the back of my tongue. Coconut is a tough flavor to nail, especially for a vodka. Trying to give coconut rum a run for it’s money, I think Island 808 just came up a little short.

Island 808 Coconut Vodka Review -The Mixed Drink:

For this Island 808 Coconut Vodka Review, I chose to make a Vodka Cran. I like to keep my Vodka Mixed Drinks and Vodka Cocktails simple when doing reviews.

This vodka did very well when mixed with cranberry juice. I know it sounds weird, but it’s a combination that worked. What I will have to try is making a pina colada with vodka using Island 808 Coconut Vodka (Be on the look out for that recipe!).

In addition to cranberry, I also mixed the coconut vodka with club soda. I’ve been doing this with all the Island 808 flavored vodkas and mainly because the flavors in them are really all they need. They are so rich and full that you really don’t need to add any other juices or mixers if you don’t want to. It’s not as good as the mango or pineapple, but if you love coconut, you won’t be disappointed.

 Drink Grade: B

Island 808 Coconut Vodka Review – Conclusion:

Island 808 Vodka is an interesting new vodka brand to hit the shelves. Distilled from pineapples, it stands out as something different to try in your vodka endeavors. Vodka Cocktails and Vodka Mixed Drinks are all the same, but the vodka used to make them is what makes them unique.

Island 808 Coconut Vodka is another great option of flavored vodkas for people looking for an alternative to pineapple or mango vodka. It’s got great flavor and is something different to try in your vodka endeavors. I can’t say it’s the best vodka you’ll ever have, but it might be one of the more fun ones. Pick some up next time you see it and see if it’s right for you!

Final Grade: B

Vodka Review: Sebian Elitna Vodka

It's always interesting to see other country's take on something that should be so simple. Vodka at it's most basic level should be clean, smooth, and flavorless. While that seems very straightforward, many different company's have their own ways of ensuring these qualities. Elitna Vodka from the Sebian Vodka collection is made in Ukraine and has chosen to target the ever so tasteful french demographic with their high quality vodka (they are coming to Switzerland soon, but at the time of this article, you can only find it in France). Sebian boasts that their vodka is made from wheat in a process of rectification which puts it in “class Lux”. Imagine distilling alcohol to the maximum possible limit that is thermodynamically possible, and you are left with what Elitna Vodka uses.
